THE DEAL:

So, as most of you around the Nerdcore community have become aware of, the gossip blogging website Nerdcoredrama.com has recently been involved in drama of it’s own. Over the weekend, this mudslinging group decided to post a story about a certain artist’s personal life, involving a very serious issue. Although there is a LOT of drama surrounding the individuals mentioned, it is the stance of the GeekPeekPost that this article was in poor taste. I believe it went too far.

However, I believe that any website has the right to post what they wish. NerdcoreDrama was a creation of trolls and gossipers, and with a name like ‘Nerdcore Drama’, how could ANYONE make the mistake of taking it too seriously?! A blog is opinion-based. THIS blog is opinion-based. That’s why you have the ability to disagree with me! Hell, once I weed through the spam, I’ll even accept negative comments about this post!

THE ‘FACTS’:

Let’s get down to the nitty gritty. After a bunch of crazy shit, the people found behind nerdcoredrama.com were previous Scrub Club affiliates Kourtney (model, artist with Emergency Pizza Party) and Benjamin Bear (producer and artist with EPP), as well as well-known lewd rapper Rob ‘mCRT’ Tobias. Separately, I like these individuals. However, with some of the content on their website involving negative statement of the net label which the former two were ’signed’ with, anonymity would be the ONLY way to get away with it. After discovery, MadHatter, the head of SCR, gave them the boot (*edit: which apparently they were already off at this time). He also accessed their website and took it down. Had anyone else been in place of these bloggers, there would probably be no repercussions, as apparently, according to this ongoing rhymetorrents.org thread, MadHatter received the website’s password from a friend, a mysterious ‘fourth contributor’ to the website. So it seems this website crumbled from the inside. You just can’t trust people.

After a quick interview with mCRT, I believe he said it best when he said, “They tried to create an anonymous gossip blog to both acknowledge and quash some of the rumors and drama flying around the scene.  They pissed off some people who had made bad decisions.  They were then hacked and shut down by those who didn’t like what they had to say–frankly, justifying the anonymous nature of the blog to begin with.” Although ‘hacked’ might be the wrong term, it was taken down without all of the authors’ permissions. Anonymity is a dangerous thing to try to keep. In this author’s personal opinion, down-talking a group you are a part of is a volitile game of chance.

Continuing on with the story, the folk behind Nerdcore Drama posted a statement (just about everywhere), in which they discussed the consequences of their actions. They say Hex and the NAP committee will be “banning not only those responsible for the blog, but also the other members of Emergency Pizza Party from performing or even attending any Nerdapalooza-related events” and that “Mr. McGinnis then took it upon himself to remove Emergency Pizza Party from his label, even though none of the other members of EPP had any knowledge of who was behind Nerdcore Drama.” NCD also included snippets from a supposed email from Hex. Now, I can’t verify the validity of the emailed response, but Hex and MadHatter responded via rhymetorrents.org about this issue:

Madhatter professed that he “did NOT kick EPP off the label”, and that he “talked to Hex and he only banned Bear and Kourt, not EPP.” The rhymetorrents thread goes on with Benjamin Bear saying that Sir-Up, another member of EPP, told him something different, and that apparently, Hex and MadHatter are changing their original responses.

WTF?!?!

Honestly, I don’t know WHAT to believe. Anything online can and could have been doctored. Who is in the right? Which story should you believe? Would EPP perform without BBear and Kourtney? How will the FL nerdcore scene react if EPP could no longer entertain us at Nerdapalooza related events?! Even renowned artist Beefy commented on the issue, saying that ”if epp doesn’t play the next nerdapalooza they should not bother inviting [him].” He continued later on in the thread to support the artists on the issue of being banned from performing. On Scrub Club’s message boards,  even SC rapper Deafinition submitted words of support (Don’t bother checking, I believe the thread will be gone by the time you try):

IN CONCLUSION:

So we have a lot of different people believing a lot of different things. It appears that the only way to figure out the truth is to be patient and wait for time to tell. We know this issue isn’t done being argued, and the likelihood is this will result in very negative attention toward Scrub Club Records. The Nerdcore Drama blogging site was meant to express opinion. It’s just unfortunate that opinions have to be so different across the board. The only post the GeekPeekPost had trouble with is the final one.

What I’m truly concerned about is the fact that artists can be banned for expressing opinions. The fact is, EPP was entertaining at Nerdapalooza 2010. Benjamin Bear was involved in multiple sets this past year, and I believe is a fun part of the nerdcore world. It has me concerned for what the future of Nerdapalooza and geek music may be…

THE FUTURE:

So where does this leave Emergency Pizza Party? EPP is still signed to Scrub Club Records, but without the fluid rap talent of Benjamin Bear, or the vocal support of Kourtney, will EPP continue to work with a record label they are all too newly signed to? From one source, I hear Sir Up, of EPP, will be releasing a statement tonight. Let’s hope for some closure/understanding.

Here are some final words from Lo Tech, one voice from the GeekPeekPost:

When you have one person controlling a group, website or organization, there is a LOT riding on your shoulders. YOU are the leader. What you do reflects directly on your organization. MadHatter, you are the leader of a very prominent name in the Nerdcore and geek hip hop community. What you do, what you say, and how to react to ANYTHING online will impact your net label, your ‘family’. You need to be an adult. You need to think rationally. Logging on, however you got the password to the account, and messing with the content of a website that does not belong to you was an immature response to this issue. The material may have gotten offensive, and a lot of the other posts you may have disagreed with. Fact is: it’s not your site to edit, regardless of who gave you the password. Instead, consider an alternative: posting positive blogs about your organization or refuting their comments on your website? These both would get more attention to your label that will not result in the negative consequences that your recent actions will undoubtedly lead to. It’s hard to lead a large collection of people. But this isn’t about you. You’re bound to encounter dissenters within your organization, but not every child agrees with the actions of their father. YOU placed yourself at this position of leader, and you need to realize that the future of Scrub Club Records, your family, will prosper or crumble at your hands. And on a related note, stop trying to steal the spotlight from other artists. You don’t always have to be center stage. We know you’re the head of Scrub Club already.

As an overall idea, I love the superhero angle. In short, this album tells the tale of a man who must choose whether or not to use his power for good or evil. As the tracks progress, our young hero, ‘The Truth’, slowly is overcome by ‘The Answer’, and he has a choice: help the Anarchitype against the Hands of Blood, or fall to villainy.

It’s an entertaining concept with some fancy beats and pretty damn good mixing. Because it’s a concept album, it includes a skit, which is recorded in a very serious, very engrossed manner. You are feeling the story as it happens.

Backstory – The beat does well as an announcement to who The Truth is (gotta love the horns). There are a couple moments where the flow seems off, but for the most part, it’s an easy listen with clever lyrics.
Both Sides of the Coin – The beat comes in very serious, and you can just tell it’s gonna be an intense track. I really like the hook. KPX does a decent job singing! Flow at times off, maybe because the beat is a bit slow. Hard to follow the content for some reason.
Hero vs. Villain – So now we get to the part where The Answer is really coming out. Passionate beat with the piano, and I think it fits perfect. Flow is pretty hot on this, and the lyrics are pretty damn good for the story. Dope track!
Awakenings (skit) – Appropriately named, I think it’s great to throw in a short skit for the transformation.
Traitor – FAVORITE TRACK! Love love love it! This is a sexy, dirty, gritty beat, and KPX rapping over it with his gruff voice really makes this track amazing (no homo). Flow and beat sync perfectly for the ear, and the hook is INCREDIBLE. I sing at the top of my lungs every time I hear it!
Anarchitype Rush – With Thunderball and MadHatter on the track, it adds more dimension to the story. Flow for everyone is on point, the beat interesting with the strings, and Thunderball is just a treat to listen to! This is one of those songs that will get the crowd responding in a live setting.
The Finale – Very serious intro to the track, and again with the dirty sort of beat (lovin’ it!). Throughout the track, you just want to find out who’s gonna win in this ‘futile game of tag’. I’m not sure about the ending to this track. As serious as the battle within himself was, I think the finale of The Finale should have been as dramatic as the beginning of The Finale. However, the overall impression of this track was a good finish to an interesting concept album.

So, overall? I dug it. I haven’t listened to too many concept albums, but I truly enjoyed this creation, and King Pheenix really puts his heart into the story. I was lucky enough to catch his performance of Traitor at Nerdapalooza 2010, and you can tell how passionate he is about his lyrics and music. I look forward to hearing more from King Pheenix, and I think he was an AMAZING addition to the Scrub Club Records team! I see great things from you, KPX!

I found a lovely new layout for the Post, and I hope ya’ll can bear with me as I figure out the kinks! I think it makes it more ‘newspaper-like’.

We here at the GeekPeekPost have decided to expand our coverage of Nerd Life. Sure, the games, nerd music, technology and stuff are important aspects of geekdom, but I think it’s important to stress another facet of the nerd lifestyle: HEALTH. That’s right, in order to be at the top of your game, you need to level up your fitness!

We’re all aware of the stereotype of geeks. Sitting at your computer (much like you are now), munching on some salty/sweet goodies, drinking Mountain Dew by the liter…am I pretty close?

There’s nothing wrong with being who you are, and I wouldn’t ask you to change for anyone but yourself. But let’s face it: people are happier when they’re healthier. You just feel good about yourself!

Several notable nerdy sources have already expressed an interest in getting fit.

Scrub Club Records: About a month or two ago, Scrub Club Records’ MadHatter started on the quest to help the nerd world ‘Gain HP‘, with their game-themed contest with that name. If you head on over to their site, you can catch the progress of the competition.

Nerd Fitness: Nerd Fitness is more than just a blog. Created by Steve Kamb, this source provides insight into many dimensions of nerd health. Updated often, it offers geek-themed ideas of exercise and diet.

Hipster, Please!: In March, Z over at Hipster, Please! had created the Pokewalker Fitness Challenge in an effort to utilize those Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver Pokewalker pedometers and get nerds out there walking!

These are just a few of the likely many geeks who are striving for healthier lifestyles. So we thought to ourselves: Why not help in the fight for fitness?! So, the GeekPeekPost presents:

This blog will focus on aspects of the “Paleo Diet”, with more of an emphasis on Primal Living. We’re looking for some awesome volunteers who can spend some time at our raffle table selling raffle tickets! The GeekPeekPost is planning big things for this blogsite, and in order for us to bring awesome geeky news to the world, we need to be able to move around Nerdapalooza 2010!

What are the perks of volunteering?

Every 30 minutes you spend volunteering at the raffle table will award you one free raffle ticket to be handed out by the raffle staff. ( 30 minutes is like 1/50th of the total Nerdapalooza time – give or take – so you won’t be missing too much, and you’ll be helping out a LOT!)

There also may be an opportunity for free ‘refreshments’.
